Transfiguration of the Lord

The Transfiguration of our Lord stands as a luminous peak in the earthly life of Jesus Christ, a moment where the veil of His humanity was momentarily pulled back to reveal the blinding radiance of His divinity. This sacred event occurred shortly after Jesus had begun to speak plainly to His disciples about His impending suffering and death in Jerusalem. Sensing their fear and confusion, He took Peter, James, and John—the same three who would later witness His agony in Gethsemane—up a high mountain, traditionally identified as Mount Tabor. The ascent was a physical representation of the spiritual climb required to encounter the Living God, leaving behind the noise of the valley to seek the clarity of the heights. Upon the summit, while Jesus was at prayer, a startling transformation occurred. His face shone like the sun, and His garments became white as light, an intensity of purity that no earthly fuller could achieve. This was not a light reflected from an external source, but the inherent glory of the Word made flesh, surging forth from within. In this moment, the disciples were granted a foretaste of the Resurrection, a visual assurance that the Cross was not a defeat but the necessary path to eternal victory. The appearance of Moses and Elijah beside the transfigured Lord served to anchor this miracle in the long history of salvation. Moses, the lawgiver, and Elijah, the greatest of the prophets, stood as witnesses to the fact that Jesus was the fulfillment of all that had been promised to Israel. They spoke with Him not of earthly kingdoms, but of His 'exodus'—His departure which He was to accomplish in Jerusalem. This conversation underscored that the glory of Tabor is inseparable from the sacrifice of Calvary. Peter, overwhelmed by the beauty of the vision and perhaps seeking to prolong the ecstasy to avoid the predicted suffering, suggested building three tents. However, the experience was not meant for permanent habitation but for transient strength. As a bright cloud overshadowed them—a sign of the Shekinah, the divine presence—the voice of the Father thundered, 'This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.' This divine endorsement was the ultimate validation of Christ's mission. The disciples fell on their faces in holy fear, but Jesus, with a touch of profound tenderness, encouraged them to rise and not be afraid. When they looked up, they saw only Jesus, now in His ordinary appearance, ready to walk the road to the Cross. The Transfiguration remains for all believers a beacon of hope. It reminds us that our own bodies and the entire created order are destined for transformation in Christ. It teaches us that prayer is the crucible of change and that by listening to the Son, we are gradually refashioned into His likeness. The feast, celebrated on August 6th, invites the Church to look beyond the shadows of the present world to the enduring light of the Kingdom where we shall see Him as He is.
