Assumption of Mary

The mystery of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands as a radiant beacon of hope for all humanity, representing the ultimate fulfillment of the Christian promise. While the Holy Scriptures do not explicitly detail the final moments of Mary’s earthly journey, the living memory of the Church has, since the apostolic age, held fast to the conviction that the Mother of God was not permitted to see the corruption of the grave. Instead, having completed the course of her earthly life, she was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven. This singular privilege flows directly from her unique role in the economy of salvation as the Theotokos—the God-bearer. Following the Ascension of our Lord and the momentous outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the Blessed Virgin remained a vital, though quiet, heart of the nascent Church. Entrusted by Jesus from the Cross to the care of the Beloved Disciple, Saint John, she lived a life of profound prayer and intercession. Whether in the holy city of Jerusalem or the quiet hills of Ephesus, her presence was a living gospel for the Apostles and the first believers. She who had carried the Word in her womb now carried the memory of His life, death, and resurrection in her heart, offering strength and maternal wisdom to the men who would carry the Gospel to the ends of the earth. As the years passed, Mary’s longing for her Son only intensified. The transition from this life to the next, often referred to in the East as the Dormition or the Falling Asleep, was not characterized by the sting of death or the agony of sin’s penalty. Because she was preserved from the stain of original sin from the moment of her conception, the consequences of that sin—namely, the separation of body and soul leading to bodily decay—held no claim over her. Tradition recounts that as her time drew near, the Apostles were miraculously gathered from their various missions to Jerusalem to witness her departure. They surrounded her with prayer and love as she surrendered her spirit into the hands of her Son. The accounts of her burial further illuminate this mystery. It is said that after her body was laid in a tomb in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Apostle Thomas arrived late. When the tomb was opened to allow him a final farewell, the body of the Virgin was gone. In its place, the apostles found the tomb filled with the sweet fragrance of heavenly flowers. This empty tomb was the first earthly evidence of her bodily glorification. The Assumption is the coronation of her Fiat—the Yes she gave to the Angel Gabriel. In her, the resurrection of the body, which all Christians await at the end of time, has already been realized. She is the first-fruits of the harvest, the promise that where the Head has gone, the members of the Body are destined to follow. For the faithful, particularly within the United States where she is honored as patroness under the title of the Immaculate Conception, the Assumption is a source of profound encouragement. It affirms the dignity of the human body, created by God and destined for eternal life. Mary, in her glorified state, is not a distant figure of the past but a living advocate who stands before the throne of God. She watches over the Universal Church with a mother’s care, guiding her children through the trials of this life toward the joy of the next. Her Assumption is the final triumph over the ancient serpent. As she was once the humble handmaid of the Lord, she is now the Queen of Heaven, clothed with the sun and standing upon the moon. Yet, her majesty remains rooted in her humility. She does not draw attention to herself but always points toward her Son, whispering to the soul the same words she spoke at Cana: Do whatever He tells you. In celebrating this feast, we celebrate the victory of grace over nature and the certain hope that we, too, may one day share in the glory of the resurrection.
