Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Established by Pope Pius XII in 1954, this feast celebrates the Blessed Virgin Mary's royal dignity as the Mother of God and her role as the merciful Queen-Mother who intercedes for the entire human race.
The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a feast that crowns the liturgical honors paid to the Mother of God, formalizing a devotion that has pulsated through the heart of the Church since the earliest centuries. While the feast itself was officially instituted by Pope Pius XII in 1954, the recognition of Mary as Queen is rooted in the very moment of the Annunciation. When the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin of Nazareth, he announced that her Son would receive the throne of David His father and reign over the house of Jacob forever. In the ancient Near Eastern tradition, it was not the wife of the king who held the primary royal dignity, but the Mother of the King—the 'Gebirah' or Great Lady. By accepting her role as the Mother of the Messiah, Mary was uniquely positioned as the Queen-Mother of the eternal Kingdom. This royal dignity is not one of worldly pomp or tyrannical power, but a maternal sovereignty of service and intercession. The early Church Fathers, including Saint Ephrem the Syrian and Saint John Damascene, spoke eloquently of her royal status, calling her the 'Lady' and 'Sovereign' of all creation. As the Church matured, this belief found expression in the 'Salve Regina' and the 'Regina Caeli,' hymns that have risen from monasteries and cathedrals for a millennium. In the mid-twentieth century, following the horrors of the Second World War, Pope Pius XII sought to point a fractured world toward a source of true peace and order. In his encyclical 'Ad Caeli Reginam,' he noted that Mary is Queen not only because of her Divine Motherhood, but also because of her role as the 'New Eve' alongside the 'New Adam.' Just as Christ is King by right of conquest, having redeemed the world through His blood, Mary shares in this royalty through her intimate participation in the work of the Redemption. She stood at the foot of the Cross, her heart pierced by the sword of sorrow, offering her Son for the salvation of the world. Therefore, her queenship is intrinsically linked to her compassion. Her crown is not made of gold alone, but of the stars of her virtues and the thorns of her sacrifice. By placing this feast on the octave day of the Assumption, the Church signals that Mary’s coronation is the natural fulfillment of her bodily entry into heaven. Having been preserved from the corruption of the grave, she was exalted by the Lord as Queen of all, so that she might be the more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and the conqueror of sin and death. Today, the Queenship of Mary serves as a reminder that we have a mother who reigns with Christ, looking down upon her children with a gaze of mercy. She does not distance herself from us through her majesty; rather, her royal power is the very means by which she distributes the graces of the Kingdom to those who invoke her name in the valleys of this world.
Stages of Grace
The Royal Annunciation
The Archangel Gabriel greets Mary as one 'full of grace,' signaling her unique dignity and announcing that her Son will inherit the eternal throne of David. This moment establishes her as the Gebirah, the Queen-Mother of the promised Messianic Kingdom.
The Visitation Recognition
Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cries out in greeting to Mary, calling her 'the mother of my Lord.' This acknowledgment by her kinswoman serves as the first earthly recognition of Mary’s royal status as the Mother of the Sovereign King.
Suffering at the Foot of the Cross
Mary participates in the redemptive act of her Son, becoming the Queen of Martyrs through her intense spiritual suffering. Her queenship is earned not through worldly privilege but through her total union with the sacrifice of the King of Kings.
The Glorious Assumption
At the end of her earthly life, Mary is taken body and soul into heaven, a prerequisite for her celestial coronation. This event marks the transition from her hidden life of service to her public exaltation in the heavenly court.
The Coronation in Glory
In the presence of the Holy Trinity and all the angels, Mary is crowned as Queen of Heaven and Earth. This theological reality reflects her role as the woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars.
Formal Institution of the Feast
Pope Pius XII officially institutes the universal feast in 1954 to conclude the Marian Year. He emphasizes that her maternal royalty is a source of hope and a call for peace in the modern, troubled world.
"Let the entire human race give honor to the Mother of God, the Lady and Queen of the world."
A Prayer
O God, who made the Mother of your Son to be our Mother and our Queen, graciously grant that, sustained by her intercession, we may attain in the heavenly Kingdom the glory promised to your children. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
