St. Maria Goretti

In the small town of Corinaldo, within the Marche region of Italy, a light was kindled in 1890 that would eventually illuminate the entire Catholic world. Maria Teresa Goretti was the third of seven children born to Luigi Goretti and Assunta Carlini, a family of sharecroppers whose lives were defined by the rhythmic cycles of the liturgical year and the grueling demands of the soil. Despite their material poverty, the Goretti household was rich in the spirit of the Gospel. Assunta, a woman of profound and practical faith, taught her children that the soul's purity was a treasure far outweighing any worldly comfort. This foundation of sanctity was tested early when the family, seeking a better life, migrated to the malaria-ridden plains of the Pontine Marshes near Nettuno. They shared a cramped, dilapidated farmhouse at Le Ferriere with the Serenelli family—a widowed father, Giovanni, and his son, Alessandro. The environment was harsh, the air thick with disease, and the work unrelenting. When Maria was only nine, her father Luigi succumbed to malaria, leaving the family in a desperate struggle for survival. While Assunta took to the fields to fulfill their labor contract, young Maria stepped into the role of the household's heart, cooking, cleaning, and caring for her younger siblings with a maturity far beyond her years. Neighbors remembered her not as a somber child, but as one who hummed hymns while she worked, her rosary always close at hand. The primary trial of her life began to manifest through Alessandro Serenelli. Older and physically stronger, Alessandro became obsessed with Maria, whose blooming adolescence and radiant innocence served as a sharp contrast to his own troubled and neglected upbringing. He began to make lewd propositions and threats, which Maria rebuffed with a quiet but iron-willed resolve. She sought strength in her First Holy Communion, which she received in June 1902, famously telling her mother she wanted to belong entirely to Jesus. The climax of this spiritual battle occurred on July 5, 1902. While the rest of the family worked nearby in the fields, Alessandro trapped Maria alone in the cottage. When he attempted to violate her, she resisted with all her strength, crying out, 'No! It is a sin! God does not want it! You will go to hell!' Frustrated and enraged by her refusal to submit, Alessandro stabbed the eleven-year-old girl fourteen times with a long steel awl. Even as she collapsed, her concern was for the state of his soul rather than her own agony. She was rushed to the hospital in Nettuno, where she survived for twenty-four hours in excruciating pain. It was there, in her final moments, that the true miracle of her sanctity was revealed. When asked by a priest if she forgave her attacker, she responded without hesitation: 'I forgive Alessandro Serenelli for the love of Jesus, and I want him to be with me in Paradise.' Maria died on July 6, 1902, holding a crucifix and a medal of the Blessed Mother. Her story did not end at the grave. Alessandro, initially unrepentant in prison, experienced a transformative vision of Maria in his cell, where she handed him lilies that turned into white flames. This encounter led to a complete conversion of heart. After serving twenty-seven years, he sought out Assunta Goretti to beg her forgiveness, which she freely gave. In 1950, Pope Pius XII canonized Maria as a Martyr of Purity. In a historic moment, the Saint's own mother and her repentant murderer stood together in St. Peter's Square, witnesses to the power of a faith that chooses death over sin and mercy over vengeance.
