St. Luke the Evangelist

During Paul’s final imprisonment in Rome, as the shadows of martyrdom lengthened, the Apostle wrote those poignant words that have echoed through the centuries: 'Only Luke is with me.' Tradition states that he suffered martyrdom for the sake of the Gospel in Boeotia at the age of eighty-four, being hanged from an olive tree as a final witness to the Tree of Life. His relics were later translated to Constantinople and eventually to Padua, Italy, where they remain a site of pilgrimage. Saint Luke remains the patron of physicians and artists, a man who understood that the healing of the person requires both the science of the body and the art of the soul, all centered upon the Great Physician, Jesus Christ.
