St. Angela Merici

Saint Angela Merici was born in the small town of Desenzano on the shores of Lake Garda in northern Italy. Raised in a devout and hardworking household, her early life was marked by a deep sense of family and faith. However, this domestic peace was shattered in her teenage years by the deaths of her parents and her beloved sister in rapid succession. Left an orphan, Angela sought consolation in the Third Order of Saint Francis, embracing a life of austerity and prayer. During this period of mourning and searching, she experienced a defining vision while working in the fields: she saw a ladder reaching from earth to heaven, upon which angels and young women ascended. Among them was her late sister, who told Angela that she was destined to found a company of women who would serve God through the education of young girls. This vision remained the guiding star of her long and patient life. After several years, Angela moved to the city of Brescia, which was then suffering under the weight of war and civil unrest. She became a pillar of the community, offering counsel to the wealthy and solace to the poor. Her reputation for holiness grew, yet she remained humble, living in a small room and sleeping on a mat of straw. In 1524, she undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, but during the voyage, she was struck with a mysterious blindness. Rather than turning back, Angela continued her journey, visiting the holy sites with the eyes of her soul, later stating that she saw the places of Christ's passion more clearly in the dark than she ever could have with physical sight. Upon her return, her vision was miraculously restored. It was not until she was nearly sixty years old that Angela finally realized the mission revealed to her decades earlier. In 1535, she gathered twenty-eight young women to form the Company of Saint Ursula. Unlike the nuns of her time, these women did not wear a habit or live behind the walls of a cloister; instead, they lived in their own homes, working in their communities and teaching girls how to lead virtuous lives. This was a revolutionary concept in the sixteenth century, asserting that a woman could be fully consecrated to God while remaining active in the world. Angela Merici served as the mother of this community until her death in 1540. Her final words to her sisters were a plea for unity and love, reminding them that God would always be their strength. Her legacy lives on in the Ursuline sisters across the globe, who continue her mission of education and care for the vulnerable.
