Our Lady of Lourdes

In the cold winter of 1858, the small town of Lourdes in the foothills of the Pyrenees was a place of obscurity and poverty. The Lady folded her hands and looked to heaven, saying, 'Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou'—I am the Immaculate Conception. Only four years prior, Pope Pius IX had defined this title as a dogma of the Church, a theological term that the unlettered Bernadette could not have understood on her own. This revelation served as a divine seal upon the apparitions, confirming their authenticity to the skeptical Abbé Peyramale and the wider ecclesiastical world. As the visions ended, Bernadette’s own journey led her away from the spotlight of Lourdes to the convent of the Sisters of Charity in Nevers, where she lived a life of hidden suffering and prayer until her death. Meanwhile, Lourdes transformed. The grotto became a sanctuary where the sick, the broken, and the seeking gathered by the thousands.
