Sts. Andrew Kim Taegon and Companions

In the nineteenth century, the 'Hermit Kingdom' of Korea was a land of profound isolation and ancient traditions, yet it became the setting for one of the most remarkable chapters in Christian history. Unlike many other nations where the Gospel was first brought by foreign clergy, the faith in Korea was kindled by the curiosity and zeal of lay scholars who discovered Christian texts in China and brought them home. Among the fruit of this lay-led movement was Andrew Kim Taegon, born in 1821 into a family of nobility and deep conviction. The Kim family was already steeped in the scent of sacrifice; Andrew’s great-grandfather and father had both suffered for the Cross. Growing up in an atmosphere where following Christ meant a constant readiness for death, young Andrew developed a soul that was both resilient and singularly focused on the divine. In 1836, when French missionaries clandestineley entered the country, they recognized in the fifteen-year-old Andrew a potential shepherd for his people. He was chosen to travel over a thousand miles to Macau for seminary studies, a journey that required him to traverse hostile territories and endure extreme deprivation. In the humid exile of Macau and later in the Philippines, he mastered theology, philosophy, and several languages, all while knowing that his return home would likely be a march toward his own execution. He was ordained a priest in Shanghai in 1845, becoming the first native Korean to receive the sacrament of Holy Orders. His return to his homeland was a feat of daring navigation, as he guided a small wooden boat through stormy seas to avoid the coastal guards who executed any who dared to introduce 'foreign' ideas. Once back on Korean soil, Father Andrew became a phantom of mercy. He traveled by night, disguised in the traditional mourning clothes that hid his face, to celebrate the Sacraments for the scattered and terrified Catholic communities. His ministry was brief, lasting barely a year, but it was defined by an intensity of love that galvanized the local Church. His primary mission was to establish a safe sea route for more missionaries to enter, a task that eventually led to his capture in 1846. Even in prison, his nobility of character and his intellect impressed his interrogators. The King himself was hesitant to execute a man of such evident talent, but the pressure of the state’s anti-Christian laws prevailed. On September 16, 1846, at the age of twenty-five, Andrew was led to the Saenamteo execution grounds near Seoul. He met his end with a serene exhortation to his executioners and the crowd, his blood waterng the soil of a Church that would grow to be one of the most vibrant in Asia. Standing beside him in the history of the Korean Church is Paul Chong Hasang, a brilliant lay leader who traveled to China multiple times to petition for priests, and thousands of unnamed men, women, and children who chose the Kingdom of God over the comforts of the world. Together, St. Andrew Kim Taegon and his 102 fellow martyrs represent the triumph of grace over isolation, proving that no wall is too high for the Spirit of God to scale.
