Sts. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels

In the vast and shimmering hierarchy of the celestial court, three names shine with a particular brilliance, revealing to humanity the multi-faceted nature of God’s care for His creation. These are the Archangels: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Unlike the saints of earth who began in the flesh and were perfected through the trials of time, these pure spirits were created in the morning of the universe. They are intellects of fire and light, possessing neither bodies nor the limitations of space, yet they have intervened in the history of man with a presence as tangible as a sword, a word, or a healing hand. To speak of them is to speak of the very breath of God moving across the face of the world, for their names themselves are descriptors of the Divine essence. Saint Michael, whose name is a battle cry meaning 'Who is like God?', stands as the prince of the heavenly host. His journey, if it can be called such, began with a definitive choice at the dawn of creation. When the pride of the morning star, Lucifer, sought to rival the Most High, it was Michael who rallied the faithful spirits, casting the rebels from the heights of heaven. Throughout the Old Testament, he was recognized as the special protector of the people of Israel, standing watch over the chosen lineage from which the Messiah would spring. In the Christian tradition, he remains the 'Standard-Bearer' of the Church, the one who receives the souls of the departed and guards the faithful against the snares of the devil. He is the warrior-angel, the defender of the Divine Honor, reminding all created things that God alone is the source of all majesty. Saint Gabriel, whose name signifies 'God is my Strength,' serves as the bridge between the mystery of the Divine and the understanding of man. He is the supreme herald, the messenger of the Incarnation. His presence is felt at the most pivotal moments of the transition between the Old and New Covenants. It was Gabriel who appeared to the prophet Daniel to explain the visions of the end times, and it was he who stood at the right side of the altar of incense to announce the birth of John the Baptist to the aged Zechariah. Most profoundly, Gabriel entered the humble home of a virgin in Nazareth, his greeting 'Hail, full of grace' echoing through the centuries as the opening note of the Gospel. In Gabriel, we see the archangel of the Word, the one who brings the light of understanding to the humble and announces the fulfillment of God’s promises. Saint Raphael, the 'Medicine of God,' reveals a more intimate, companionable aspect of the angelic ministry. His story is primarily chronicled in the Book of Tobit, where he disguises himself as a fellow traveler named Azarias to guide the young Tobias on a perilous journey. Raphael is the angel of providence and healing, watching over the small details of life—safety in travel, the integrity of marriage, and the restoration of sight. He does not arrive with a sword or a trumpet, but with the quiet wisdom of a guide and the restorative power of a physician. By healing the elder Tobit of his blindness and protecting Sarah from demonic oppression, Raphael demonstrates that the heavenly spirits are deeply concerned with the physical and emotional restoration of the human person. Together, these three archangels represent the totality of the angelic mission: to worship God in the perpetual liturgy of heaven and to serve as His instruments on earth. They remind the Church that the world is far larger than what is visible to the eye. In Michael, we find protection; in Gabriel, we find the truth of the Gospel; and in Raphael, we find the comfort of God’s healing presence. They stand forever before the throne, yet they are never far from the side of the wayfarer who calls upon them in faith.
